New out of Old : review of jewellery workshop

17 Apr

It proved surprisingly hard to find enough broken jewellery for this workshop but luckily the car boot season started 2 weeks before the workshop plus the charity ‘Horsham Matters’ very kindly gave us a donation of some jewellery with other items which meant we had plenty for the workshop in the end. Phew, potential disaster averted!

All 20 places on this workshop were booked before it was even advertised and so everyone gathered with anticipation. Emily, who was our guest tutor, confidently showed us the basics and new ways to reinvent our pre-loved and broken jewellery and filled us with inspiration when showing us the examples of her jewellery that she’d brought along featuring crocheted wire, beaded rings and lace cuffs. Emily brought with her a huge toolbox, a tardis, which held every jewellery component possible I think! There was soon an air of deep concentration whilst people created new items of jewellery from old. From wired ear cuffs to crochet doily brooches. The vintage brooch with its broken clasp now has a new lease of life hanging as a pendant on a necklace. Both beginners and experienced crafters got a lot out of this workshop and we all seem to have learnt something new. Emily provided everyone with a handy worksheet and a small bag of jewellery fittings so that earrings, rings, bracelets, brooches and necklaces were all covered.

Geoff Dennison from Dennison Studios, based in Horsham, very kindly volunteered his time to take some photographs for us during the workshop and I shall now let the pictures speak for themselves…..

We will be doing some basic jewellery making at the future Craft Café nights to make new items of jewellery which will then be donated to Cancer Research in East Street so if you fancy creating items with us come along.

Emily is back off to university but has promised to come back in the summertime to lead another jewellery workshop and you can keep up with her on her blog. You can put your name down on the list now if you’d like?!
