The End of Make?

10 Feb

It is with great sadness that we have no choice but to cancel our next event on Monday 10th February and to close our doors for the time being. Huge thanks to those of you who have supported us over the last 2 years.

If you would like to go on a mailing list (I haven’t kept one before) to be notified if we do anything else please email me at

Happy Birthday to us and a quick update

7 Feb

A happy 2nd birthday to us!

The start of a new year and the start of our 3rd year………………..

A big thank you to those who responded to my post about the future of Make. I have taken all the suggestions on board and implemented a lot of your ideas. The first change is that we will now be running our workshops and craft café on just one night a month instead of two. With a full time job (and some health issues) I just can’t do the regular 20 hours plus a week Make usually takes me any more.

We have resisted increasing the prices of our workshops and kept them the same even though the basic costs of hall hire, insurance etc has risen which is good news. To help we’ll introduce a Donations Pot on the counter for contributions for tea and cake. However I would like to stress that this is entirely optional so please don’t feel you have to contribute. We would really love your help with the Cake rota, making tea rota and putting up of leaflets. Please do get in touch if you can help.

We are also really trying to promote our Craft Café and this year we will be giving lots of free lessons whilst we craft various things for charity. This kicks off on Monday 10th February with free knitting help and we will be starting a project of knitting 6” squares to make into blankets for next winter for those who need them in our local community.

As you will have seen we have some great workshops coming up but again we need full workshops to meet our basic costs so we need your support. From an immediate point of view we have lots of spaces on workshops on Monday 10th February: Patchwork Quilt, Mosiac and Hidden Heart Cupcakes. Do take a look and share with your friends that might enjoy our friendly and relaxed workshops? If you are new to us this is the perfect time to get involved.

Please, please remember if you don’t use this community project and/or support it then we will have no option but to close, I cannot stress enough that you need to vote with bookings. You can contact us via email at if you’d like to speak to us.

Many thanks for reading this.

The Future of MAKE?

23 Nov

This is quite a difficult post to write and not sure where to start or what I really want to say. In a nutshell I wanted to ask you all what you think the future of MAKE should be?

We’ve been going for two years now and went from strength to strength from the start but over the last few months it has been harder and harder to fill spaces on our workshops  with the danger of some Christmas workshops having to be cancelled and so we are losing money. As you all know we are a community project, non-profit and run by volunteers who put in a huge amount of work. However in January all our basic costs, hall hire, insurance, advertising etc. are set to rise again  – but we don’t really want to raise our prices of our workshops.

We were the first in Horsham to run creative craft workshops and now there are 4 others who also offer craft workshops which means that the market is getting competitive and I for one don’t want to compete; I set this up so that craft workshops were accessible to all in Horsham and so that money wasn’t a hindrance to anyone and also to be a community project.

So what I need to know from you:

a) do you still want to come to MAKE workshops?

b) if you do what kind of craft workshops would you want to come to?

If we get enough positive messages then we will be continuing after Christmas.

Any form of constructive feedback would be most welcome. Either in these comments or via email . Look forward to hearing from you.

Take Care,

Magdalen x

What is next……?

6 Jun

We haven’t done any kind of update for a long time so I thought I’d do a quick round up of what is happening at our next evening on 17th June.

LEARN ABOUT YOUR SEWING MACHINE workshop with the lovely Victoria from Cuddle Monsters is fully booked, no doubt due to the popularity of The Great British Sewing Bee? This is the second one we have run so do let us know if you are interested in another workshop and we can see if we can persuade Victoria to run it again!

PAVERPOL CANVAS OR VASE – we have a few spaces on this workshop, info is here so do get in touch if you’d like to have a go. Irma has had a wonderful article written about her art with lots of pictures of her beautiful sculptures in this months AAH magazine which is out now. Do take a look, the link to read it online is here page 61 onwards.

KNITTED FLOWERS – this is a new workshop that we have just added due to demand so get in touch quickly if you’d like one of the remaining spaces. Karen has developed this one-off workshop especially for beginners or those who feel a bit rusty. Info is here.

LAMPSHADE MAKING – we ran this last September and it was popular so this is our 2013 class! We can take some extra people onto this workshop so get in touch if you want to book a space. However the deadline for booking is Monday 10th June as we have to order the kits.

We then only have two more evenings (8th and 15th July) before we have a break until 16th September. We are busy putting together all the new workshops for Autumn and Winter which will be up on here at the end of July.

All places must be pre-booked so if you would like a booking form for any of the workshops above then email us at . We also have the Craft Cafe running alongside all the workshops, this is the only part where you can just turn up, no need to prebook. If you are not sure what this entails then more information is here.

Looking forward to seeing some of you there.
