Reading Knitting Patterns Workshop

17 Jun

Monday 15th Julyh  2013

IMPROVERS KNITTING:

READING KNITTING PATTERNS WORKSHOP

with Kate Sinclair

7.00-9.30pm (2 ½ hrs) at Brighton Road Baptist Church, Horsham

004 (2)

This is a single workshop, of 2 ½ hours long, on how to read a knitting pattern and how to understand knitting terminology and abbreviations. Kate, who will be your tutor, will bring along a few tools to show you how these can help when knitting from a pattern and will get you in a position to take your work away to complete with confidence.

During this workshop you will learn the thumb method cast on, how to prepare a pattern for your knitting and starting a new project. You should be able to do a knit stitch and cast off and preferably how to pearl (although this can be touched on if needed). This workshop is suitable for those with limited knitting experience and more advanced knitters.

You will need to bring along an easy to knit pattern that you’d like to try (plus wool and needles) and Kate will teach you how to read it and how to work out the trickier parts.

Prior to the workshop you will be able to have a chat with Kate about the project you’d like to do. This is ideal if you are unsure of what wool or size needles are appropriate to the pattern you have chosen. She recommends that it you are unsure that it would be best to start with a simple garter stitch/stocking stitch pattern, either a child size, or doll clothes size or poncho for your first project as it can seem daunting to start with a full adult jumper at the start!

Here are some patterns from the internet that I found that might inspire you on your project? Try searching for ‘Free Easy Knitting Patterns’ online. Alternatively you can visit some of the wool stockists in Horsham, The Littlest Craft Shop, The Cloth Store or C&H Fabrics?

These photos of dolls cardigan and baby’s coat have come from Craftsy. This is a great site where you can download cheap, or sometimes free, patterns.

What is next……?

6 Jun

We haven’t done any kind of update for a long time so I thought I’d do a quick round up of what is happening at our next evening on 17th June.

LEARN ABOUT YOUR SEWING MACHINE workshop with the lovely Victoria from Cuddle Monsters is fully booked, no doubt due to the popularity of The Great British Sewing Bee? This is the second one we have run so do let us know if you are interested in another workshop and we can see if we can persuade Victoria to run it again!

PAVERPOL CANVAS OR VASE – we have a few spaces on this workshop, info is here so do get in touch if you’d like to have a go. Irma has had a wonderful article written about her art with lots of pictures of her beautiful sculptures in this months AAH magazine which is out now. Do take a look, the link to read it online is here page 61 onwards.

LAMPSHADE MAKING – we ran this last September and it was popular so this is our 2013 class! We can take some extra people onto this workshop so get in touch if you want to book a space. However the deadline for booking is Monday 10th June as we have to order the kits.

We then only have two more evenings (8th and 15th July) before we have a break until 16th September. We are busy putting together all the new workshops for Autumn and Winter which will be up on here at the end of July.

All places must be pre-booked so if you would like a booking form for any of the workshops above then email us at makehorsham@yahoo.co.uk . We also have the Craft Cafe running alongside all the workshops, this is the only part where you can just turn up, no need to prebook. If you are not sure what this entails then more information is here.

Looking forward to seeing some of you there.
