If, like me, you didn’t know what Paverpol was then the following description from Irma’s website  explains it well.

“What is Paverpol? Paverpol is a textile hardener that enables you to work with supple fabrics such as cotton, and sculpt visual masterpieces that can be displayed both in and outside your home. Paverpol is non-toxic, environmentally friendly and fun to work with. Paverpol is the only hardener with the AP safety label, making it suitable for children and adults.

How to use Paverpol? By dipping natural textile materials in Paverpol, you can drape and wrap the coated materials around a wire figurine or other frame. You can even preserve items of clothing, such as a first baby-grow, or dried flowers. Paverpol dries quickly, but gives you enough time to work and position textiles. Once hardened, you will have a beautiful and unique decoration or sculpture, which is weatherproof, so can be displayed indoors or outdoors. Providing the materials being dipped in Paverpol are natural, you can work with an array of textiles, including paper, silk, chamois leather, self hardening clay, dried flowers, untreated wood, plaster, pottery and more. You can also use polystyrene foam to fashion shapes.”

Dressing Girls Around The World

10 Feb

Wow, our first event of 2013 certainly went with a bang! What a great way to start the year by helping others. 26 of us gathered on the last Monday evening of January for a community sewing evening, all with a common aim, to make a dress for a little girl somewhere in the world who had never worn one before. This event had obviously inspired a lot of people in Horsham, many of us had young children and some had daughters so it had struck a chord. The majority of people hadn’t even touched a sewing machine before, despite this in 2 hours we ended up with 24 dresses and to date we have over 30 dresses to send to Louise of Sew Scrumptious for Dress a Girl around the world charity.

All pillowcase dresses

Everyone pitched in, from bringing home baked cookies to putting on a big pot of tea. New friends were made and time was spent with old friends. Lots of laughter and learning new skills going on, a normal evening for our Make workshops!

A huge thank you to the lovely Victoria of Cuddle Monster Crafts who suggested this project in the first place and then came to show us how to make them.

Everyone had such a good time most people asked when the next one would be! I know lots of people couldn’t make this evening either so Watch this space as we’ll organise another evening making these pillowcase dresses in March or April .

BEGINNERS CROCHET WORKSHOP – HEART BUNTING

PART 1 – 28th January and 11th February 2013

PART 2 – 25th February and 4th March 2013

with Owl & Slipper

7.30-9.30pm  at Brighton Road Baptist Church, Horsham

listing 1 make project horsham

This is a workshop for total beginners in two parts. Michelle Cresswell from Owl & Slipper will be showing you how to make a heart shape for heart bunting or garland and showing you how to construct the various edging patterns. During the first session you will learn the basic stitch and be on your way to finishing the first heart. As they are quite straight forward you could then make more in the time in-between the two sessions. The second session will be about re-enforcing technique and stitches used and then the different edging (loops, bobbles, scalloped edges and more).

You will learn the following during the two sessions:

–         How to comfortably hold the yarn and hook

–         Chain stitch, single crochet, counting stitches, increasing and decreasing using single crochet. Different edging techniques.

–         How to read a simple crochet pattern

–         Understand yarn weights, tension and gauge and hook sizes.

–         Leave with a completed heart (12cm x 14cm) or more to complete the heart bunting in your own time.

Crochet starter packs are available from Michelle but must be pre-ordered. This includes a hook, stitch conversion chart, illustrated instructions, a pattern and a ball of 100% cotton yarn from a choice of colours for only £5.50. She will also be selling the cotton yarn separately for £3 for a ball of 50g. If you don’t wish to purchase a pack please bring with you a 3.5mm or 4mm sized hook and cotton yarn.

This will only be in very exclusive small groups of 6 people only to ensure that you have Michelle’s undivided attention. We are going for a quality rather than quantity approach to crochet for the total beginners!

quilts and patchwork for Make

This is a fantastic opportunity to learn how to make a patchwork quilt with Victoria from Cuddle Monster Crafts (not to mention value for money). We are limiting the number of places available to only 8 places so that you will get a lot of individual attention. The size of quilt that you will make, from cot size to a full single bed size, is up to you and of course so is the colour and theme, it doesn’t have to be a childs quilt. We are doing this over 4 sessions so if you wanted a larger quilt there will be lots of homework to do in between each session! All basic equipment will be supplied however please note that you will need to purchase the main fabric, backing fabric and batting but this won’t be until after your first session when Victoria will give you all the details. Victoria will also be bringing along some fabric and fabric bundles in the first session for you to purchase if you wish.

The first two sessions will cover:-

–         Choosing fabric (colour and theme)

–         Choosing a design (4 patch square, log cabin or stars)

–         Cutting fabric and sewing together patches to make a sample

–         Cutting the main fabric

–         Sewing together patches to make blocks to make the quilt top.

–         Demo of the cutting of the batting and how to baste the quilt (to do at home)

The last two sessions will cover:-

–         Basting

–         A demonstration of hand quilting in a hoop

–         Designing the machine quilting and looking at the different stitches

–         Doing the machine quilting on your quilt and learning the ways to bury the threads

–         Making the bias binding
