If, like me, you didn’t know what Paverpol was then the following description from Irma’s website  explains it well.

“What is Paverpol? Paverpol is a textile hardener that enables you to work with supple fabrics such as cotton, and sculpt visual masterpieces that can be displayed both in and outside your home. Paverpol is non-toxic, environmentally friendly and fun to work with. Paverpol is the only hardener with the AP safety label, making it suitable for children and adults.

How to use Paverpol? By dipping natural textile materials in Paverpol, you can drape and wrap the coated materials around a wire figurine or other frame. You can even preserve items of clothing, such as a first baby-grow, or dried flowers. Paverpol dries quickly, but gives you enough time to work and position textiles. Once hardened, you will have a beautiful and unique decoration or sculpture, which is weatherproof, so can be displayed indoors or outdoors. Providing the materials being dipped in Paverpol are natural, you can work with an array of textiles, including paper, silk, chamois leather, self hardening clay, dried flowers, untreated wood, plaster, pottery and more. You can also use polystyrene foam to fashion shapes.”

Latest update on new mini workshops

25 Feb

Now that we have slightly changed the way our evenings work we thought it would be a good idea to update you regularly. Last year we had one large workshop each month on a Monday evening followed by a craft café evening towards the end of each month, plus some Wednesday evenings for Craft at The Crown. We are still having all our events on the first and third Monday evenings of each month (slightly different in some months due to bank holidays) however we now have several smaller workshops running side by side with our craft café on each evening. As we now have a lovely new larger venue and with the informal nature of Make this has worked well for the last two sessions.

Dressing Girls Around The World

10 Feb

Wow, our first event of 2013 certainly went with a bang! What a great way to start the year by helping others. 26 of us gathered on the last Monday evening of January for a community sewing evening, all with a common aim, to make a dress for a little girl somewhere in the world who had never worn one before. This event had obviously inspired a lot of people in Horsham, many of us had young children and some had daughters so it had struck a chord. The majority of people hadn’t even touched a sewing machine before, despite this in 2 hours we ended up with 24 dresses and to date we have over 30 dresses to send to Louise of Sew Scrumptious for Dress a Girl around the world charity.

All pillowcase dresses

Everyone pitched in, from bringing home baked cookies to putting on a big pot of tea. New friends were made and time was spent with old friends. Lots of laughter and learning new skills going on, a normal evening for our Make workshops!

A huge thank you to the lovely Victoria of Cuddle Monster Crafts who suggested this project in the first place and then came to show us how to make them.

Everyone had such a good time most people asked when the next one would be! I know lots of people couldn’t make this evening either so Watch this space as we’ll organise another evening making these pillowcase dresses in March or April .

New Felting Workshop – wet and needle felting techniques

8 Feb

Monday 4th March 2013

MAKING A SMALL BOWL AND DECORATIVE EASTER EGGS: WET FELTING AND NEEDLE FELTING WORKSHOP

with Jay Kendall of Knitwit Originals

7.00-9.30pm (2 ½ hrs) at Brighton Road Baptist Church, Horsham

Jay Kendall of Knitwit Originals is back with us by popular demand after the successful Christmas Decorations workshop in November. This time she is going to show us how to make a small vessel or bowl (approx. 6” wide by 5” high) using the wet felting technique. You will use merino wool fibres and some silk fibres all from a range of pastel colours. Wet felting is a wonderfully tactile art which allows you to build shapes. Jay will then show us how to needle felt some small easter eggs from the same fibres and how to needle felt a simple decorative pattern on them to place inside the bowl. The bowls would also make a lovely gift filled with sweets or even buttons. For more details on what needle felting is please see our previous post here.

Nettles are used as they are full of vitamins, antioxidants, histamine and other healing properties.
